Tuesday, December 6, 2011 Nailing Down The Menu

Looks like it's another one of those times when I have no idea how many people are coming. Whateve's.

I've seriously considered several menu options, and I'm not set on too much right now. I'm definitely making some version of the Pulled Pork Corn Cake Muffin we had at The Big E. Other than that I'm not too sure. I bought some Apple Butter and Pumpkin Butter in the grange building at The Big E, so maybe I'll make dessert pizzas with those and some nuts and ricotta cheese.

I'm thinking of making small batches of potato chips for our guests. We've done that before, seasoning the batches differently with Old Bay or rosemary. My deep fryer, while a fun toy, really has no capacity for serving a large amount of guests. I'm guessing people will be coming in at scattered times, hopefully the little fryer can keep up.

I've got an AWESOME song by a kick-ass band for the video - Good King Wenceslas by Demented Dream States \m/ I'm very excited to be back in the video making biz for the moment.

This'll probably be the last video for 2011. I've made way less videos this year than I did in 2010. We'll see if I get back in the groove in 2012. Between school, the re-emergence of my playwriting career and the passing of our little bunny 2011 was a tough year for dinner parties. Next year I'm hoping to go ahead with my scaled down dinner party plans. I'm also looking to branch out into private cooking lessons...and maybe more. Stay tuned!

Thursday, June 30, 2011 Grape Soda Night Was DDelicious!

Usually, once dinner is in full swing, I completely drop the ball on the picture taking and video making - but I managed to snap this shot before I ate all my grape soda pulled pork.

OMG! Grape soda pulled pork!

As I was preparing this feast over the course of two days I made an important discovery. Grape soda turns things horrible colors, but it tastes good.

Grape soda can chicken, seasoned with cocoa, chili, cardamom, galangal, allspice, sage, oregano, sea salt and pepper. Pulled pork seasoned with chili, cardamom, allspice, cinnamon, cayenne, paprika, sea salt and pepper, cooked in the crockpot with a bottle of Goya grape soda. Two kinds of grape soda BBQ sauce, one spicy and one sweet. Slammin drop biscuits, apple sauce made with grape soda and corn. Oh, the corn, with grape soda reduction and roasted garlic and butter - it was like a sweet ghetto Burre Blanc and gaddangit it was good! If you take any recipe from this dinner let it be this one. This covered about 12 ears...

1/2 can Grape Soda - put it in a pan at low-medium heat and reduce it by half,

Add a couple cloves of chopped roasted garlic and continue to reduce for about 5 minutes, it'll start to smell incredible.

Then add two sticks of butter, slowly in pieces, whisking it in to prevent separation.

Pour it on grilled corn, sprinkle with salt and BOO-YEAH!

You're going to have to trust me on this one. It sounds strange, but it will blow your mind with it's sweet complexity - simply dreamy.

Dessert was s'mores, and more grape ice cream sodas (which we also had as an app because dinner wasn't ready yet, bad timing on my part combined with early guest arrival. But no one complained they had to eat ice cream as an app, who would?). I just LOVE s'mores! I had two. And the guests loved them...and there was a big gob of melted chocolate on my carpet, always a good sign.

One of the best dinners ever - I really surprised myself. At one point, when I first pulled the pork out of the crockpot and saw the putrid color it had become I started to get nervous, but I managed to season everything perfectly. You can't go wrong with sweet and spicy, that's what I say!

Stay tuned for the video and feel free to contact me with any questions!

And, while you're at it, check out this awesome article I wrote for Alternative Control, check out this scene I did for Scenes from the Movies on Tango Dango and don't forget to make a reservation to see my play Connect Couples (dot) Com.

Monday, June 27, 2011 Grape Soda Night!

Oh, yeah baby, you read that right! Grape Soda Night!

My people love the grape soda. I don't know why this is, I actually drank one the other day and it was turrible! But there is no better way to celebrate the return of my good friend Marc than to slather our dinner in sugary purpleness. I promised him a Grape Soda Can Chicken upon his return from Mexico and I shall deliver.

Grape Soda Can Chicken, Grape Soda Pulled Pork, Grape Soda BBQ sauce, Slammin' Drop Biscuits, Grape Ice Cream Sodas...need I make more? I probably will, this is a special occasion. Stay tuned \m/

On another note entirely, I have written a brand spanking new play! It's called Connect Couples (dot) Com and it'll be premiering at the first ever Dinner Theatre Night at the Piedmont Club in Darien, CT on Saturday, July 23. Please, please, please, if you are in the area and you are able, please come down and check it out. It's only 20 bucks for dinner and a show (I'm not making the dinner this time) and you'll be supporting the incredibly nice people over at the Piedmont Club and, of course, you'll be supporting original theatre right here in lower Fairfield County.

Please pass it on! And make your reservation soon! Only 60 seats are available, and 25% of them are already sold. Reservations required by July 19, call the Piedmont Club at 203-655-7884

Wednesday, May 25, 2011 The Big Announcement!

Drumroll, please...

I am proud to announce that the next dinner party will be appearing in the award winning food blog CT Bites! Recipes included! AAAHHH!!!

This is a big deal! It's a great opportunity for The Headbanging Hostess to reach out to new readers and viewers - people who might not be googling "headbanging dinner" or "headbanging tits" (try it!). And, of course, it's a great way to introduce more people to the concept of entertaining at home!

The theme is Dinner on a Stick Night!

Dinner parties are way fun. We know this. And Dinner on a Stick Night is a fun way to get people started on their own dinner party journey. Food on a stick is cute and portable. A fun way to impress your guests with some foods they might not make at home. And, being portable, it helps your guests move about the party like the social butterfly they were born to be.

I'm thinking bread sticks (like the picture), salad on a stick, corn dog muffin apps, spicy chicken skewers, breakfast on a stick and some yet-do-be-decided dessert on a stick. Possibly s'mores on a stick... I may change my mind on that one.

PLUS I'm working on an extra special video, featuring music from three different bands. I'm still waiting to hear from one of the bands, so I will wait to make the official announcement. But I promise it'll be an awesome mix of CT music!

So, check out CT Bites! And stay tuned for one of the best dinner parties EVER! \m/

Sunday, May 1, 2011 National Day of Reason Dinner

This Thursday, while most folks are celebrating Cinco de Mayo we will be celebrating the National Day of Reason.

If you're easily offended or have no sense of humor please stop reading now.

From their website - www.nationaldayofreason.org

"A consortium of leaders from within the community of reason endorsed the idea of a National Day of Reason. This observance is held in parallel with the National Day of Prayer, on the first Thursday in May each year. The goal of this effort is to celebrate reason—a concept all Americans can support—and to raise public awareness about the persistent threat to religious liberty posed by government intrusion into the private sphere of worship."

So I'm celebrating reason with my sick sense of humor, superior moral compass and sharp cooking skills. Consider yourself warned...

Gay Wedding Soup - When asking around for religious meals someone suggested Italian Wedding Soup and Gay Wedding Soup popped out of my mouth like it was the answer to the 7 dollar question (adjusted for the depression.) Italian meatballs and a rainbow of veggies joined together in tasty matrimony with flavorful homemade stock.

Bacon Cheeseburgers on Matzoh - Oh so wrong, this I know. But wrong is funny and sometimes it's tasty, too. When I was a kid my friends took me to the JCC. When we were in the cafe they asked me what I wanted and I said "a cheeseburger." When they told me I couldn't have that and tried to explain why I declared it was stupid because cheeseburgers were real good. Oy.

And for dessert something I've decided to call...

Angel of Death Trifle - Layers of angel food cake, whipped sacred cow cream, sinful gelatin walnut pudding (who knew such a thing existed? Leave it to the Spanish aisle), deadly amounts of chocolate chunks and of course BACON! Just in case you didn't have enough bacon already.

Sounds good to me. Is anyone still reading this?

Sunday, April 3, 2011 Carnival Night Recipes

Carnival Night was a great success! The bunny may not have been impressed with the meal, but Uncle Carlos and Aunt Linda brought him bananas and basil so he couldn't really complain. And the people in attendance enjoyed celebrating the bunny's birthday with some awesome tasting food.

Deep Fried Salad with Kale Chips

Handful of green beans, one pack of button mushrooms, one jar of pickle spears.

Dry out the pickles, clean and destem the mushrooms, clean green beans and take off the strings if you need to.

To coat the veggies you'll need three bowls. One with flour, one with a milk & egg wash and one with corn meal. I used corn masa flour for the first bowl. I seasoned the milk and egg mixture with hot sauce and the corn meal I left alone.

Dip. Dip. Dip. Into the hot oil. Not rocket science. The green beans didn't really need that first bit of corn flour, they weren't moist enough to take any of it on. But the three dip process I've found really works wonders. Fish, squash...it adds a nice crunch to pretty much anything. And if you need to be gluten free the corn flour and corn meal is the way to go.

The kale chips were really tasty. Not everyone liked them, they can be a little bitter. But with enough seasoning I could be convinced to eat them every day!

Clean the kale, remove the ribs, toss with olive oil, salt and paprika and bake them in the oven in a single layer around 325 for about 15 minutes. When they're crispy they're done!

Pot Roast Sundaes

Believe it or not I've never made a pot roast. I'm not even sure if I've eaten one. I must have, it's not brain surgery. Big ole piece of marbled meat seared then cooked in the crock pot with celery, carrots, onion, garlic, salt, pepper and stock. Man I love my crock pot! I did it the day before the party, because food like this always tastes better the next day. I put the meat, veggies and juice in a smaller bowl and put it in the fridge so the fat would come together at the top and I could take it off. The next day I sliced the mean up cold, pureed all the veggies together and put it all in a pot on the stove to heat up, fall apart and come together in tastiness.

In a separate pot I made the mashed potatoes and then they went in the crock pot to stay warm! Love that crock pot, I tells ya!

Two scoops of potatoes, a scoop of pot roast, a sprinkle of cheese and a cherry tomato. I ate two of them. Crazy tasty.

Chili Cheese Dog Pizza

I had planned to make two kinds of pizza, this and a veggie. But the Chili Cheese Dog pizza was such a hit I made it twice. A few folks were brave enough to put mustard and relish on it! My husband made the chili for this one, good thing because I'd planned on just opening a can. GASP! I know. But I didn't feel like making a whole vat of chili for one or two pizzas. Thankfully my husband jumped at the chance to get back in the kitchen.

Chili, sliced hot dogs, cheese (mozzarella and cheddar)...we all wondered aloud why this was the first time our mouths were experiencing this. Incredible. Some suggested slicing the hot dog thinner, but that was nitpickyness. This was an amazing pizza combination. Talk of a pizza truck surfaced as someone suggested calling it "Vizza" :)

But it was not the time to be discussing business options and nicknaming a national dish after me. I had dessert to be making!

Cadbury Creme Eggs baked in a biscuit and served with Orange Butter Sauce.

OMG

Okay, the key here is to freeze the Cadbury Creme Eggs so they don't melt while the biscuit is baking. I used biscuit mix because I had it, but you can use any biscuit recipe you have, you could probably use the dough that comes in a can. Just remove the foil from the frozen creme egg (duh) and surround it with biscuit dough. My dough was sticky so I found myself using two hands to strategically plop, drop and slop bits of biscuit around it's entirety. Cover every little bit, no chocolate should be showing through and then plop onto parchment lined cookie sheets.

Mine baked for about 12 minutes. You'll need to add a little cook time because the center is frozen. That dough will need a bit more time to cook, trust me. My practice run was still doughy in the middle. If you've done a good job of covering the eggs in biscuit dough you won't have to worry about melted chocolate running out.

The sauce was just orange juice, a tiny spoon of sugar, butter and a corn starch slurry. I squeezed three oranges into a sauce pan and added the sugar and butter. In a separate cup I mixed water with a spoon of corn starch. When the sauce was reduced enough I added the cornstarch to thicken it. You could also use chocolate sauce, whipped creme, ice cream. Whatever your heart desires.

These were killer. No doubt about it. I had one the next day heated in the oven and I think it was even better. Or maybe they're just so good.......

Saturday, January 22, 2011 BYO Dinner Party Success

Look at the colors popping out of that sammich and tell me the first BYO Dinner Party was not a success...you can't do it! Because it looks DDelicious!

My guests came through, bringing such goodies as prosciutto, basil and fresh mozzerella to homemade sour dough bread to BACON!

Oh yeah, screw the diet, I ate me an Elvis sandwich - peanut butter, banana and BACON!

They also brought a ton of cold cuts, so we had a succession of 6 sandwich combinations. I was cooking them up on the vintage Snackmaster and George Foreman Grill simultaneously, slicing them up and supplying the guests with a steady stream of sammiches.

My cheeseburger soup came out fantastic! Here's a brief rundown of the recipe. Keep in mind I made this with my own goose stock and my own beef stock (plus some College Inn Broth I had left over in the fridge), so if you make it at home you may want to consider making some homemade stock, to add a flavor all your own.

1 1/2 pounds browned ground beef
1 big can of crushed tomatoes
3 cups of beef stock
4 cups goose stock

Shredded cheddar, lettuce, tomato and onion for garnish.

Put it all in the crockpot on high and let it come together. Adjust the seasonings if you want. My soup was pretty liquid so I added butter and flour all mashed up together as a thickener. I also dusted corn starch on the bag of shredded cheese before I stirred it into the soup. Garnish with chopped tomato, onion and lettuce.

My soup had a real chargrilled taste because I made my beef stock with a steakbone from my New Year's Eve dinner at Capital Grille. I know it sounds odd, but it's not like it's been sitting around in my purse, it was in the freezer, and it was real tasty!

And the ice cream sandwiches...you can see here how good they were. And how fun they were to make!

Bang on, my peeps!

Monday, January 17, 2011 The Return Of Dinner

It's been almost a full month since the last dinner of 2010. I've been on break from school, but a vaca it has not been. I've been playing nurse to my husband who had surgery, working on some "behind the scenes" stuff and dieting! Three weeks without meat! I think my body is remembering what it used to feel like. I even went on a walk in the 30 degree weather - 2 miles of bitter cold mixed with sweat. Love it.

BUT! This weeks dinner will provide me with at least one serving of meat... Drum roll please...

It's Soup and Snackmaster Night!

You remember the Snackmaster! That triangular sandwich making machine. Holla if you remember the commercials! (HOLLA!) You could fry an egg in it, make a plethora of sandwich combinations, even apple pie! (YUCK!) I used to bring it to the theatre for "Snackmaster Saturdays" and we'd all sear our sandwiches on it and throw them out the window. Ah, children's theatre.

Although the Snackmaster didn't find it's way onto My Top Ten Kitchen Toys list it is a great toy. More of a novelty than a regular-use item, but it has it's purpose, and that is to feed and amuse.

My diet will be put on hold for the evening as I am making Cheeseburger Soup! Yet another treat I saw on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. I'm winging the recipe, of course, and using up the last of the goose stock. The soup includes ground beef, cheese, crushed tomatoes and LETTUCE! It's something I wanted to try when I first saw it, so I'm looking forward to the end result.

The guests will be providing the sandwiches - the first in a hopeful series of BYO Dinner Parties! This helps alleviate some of the costs for us and might make dinner parties more doable for others! I don't think it should cost a ton to enjoy a meal with friends. If everyone shares the costs it can be affordable!

I haven't thought about dessert at all. I'm sure I'll come up with something. Ice cream sandwiches?

Stay tuned!

Bang on, my peeps!

Thursday, January 13, 2011 My Top Ten Kitchen Toys

Since taking over the cooking duties, the number of kitchen toys I’ve accumulated has quite surpassed the number of toys I have in other areas of the house. (If you catch my drift.) Some of these toys were bought at tag sales. I shudder to think of the actual retail price of things, although I’m getting better at setting aside issues of price and just buying what I need. For me “retail therapy” consists of me not thinking I’m worth the money and my therapist telling me otherwise.

But I digress.

My Top Ten Kitchen Toys

Number 10 – My Mandolin

This toy I bought retail, but I suppose you have to because the blades can dull pretty quickly. If I saw one at a tag sale I’d assume it was no longer a slicer. It’s a great way to make a low-calorie spaghetti substitute with zucchini. Cut it long ways using the small julienne blade and you’ve got yourself something tasty. You can also cut long thin slices using only the straight blade, these make great lasagna noodles, as we found out on Zucchini Night and when Arcane Malevolence first came to dinner. And the Seascape Fondue from Bento Schmento Night was made possible by my trusty mandolin.

Number 9 – My Food Processor

I have never met a blender that I liked. In fact, I bought a blender when I bought my mandolin and it was a piece of garbage that never ever worked. Meaning it never blended a thing. Maybe the stuff down around its blade was blended, but the rest of the blender contents remained unblended. Thus, it was an unblender and I gave it away. So when my husband came home with a 10 year old never been used food processor from the fine people over at Braun I’ll admit, I was skeptical. But this baby has the ability to blend and shred and puree and grate. I love it. Whether it was cheese for Pizza Night or cucumber melon soup for Mint Night, my food processor has always come through.

Number 8 – My Ice Cream Maker

I’ll admit it, I had a ton of ice cream trauma this summer. I’d forget to freeze the canister or I did freeze the canister and it still wasn’t working. As it turned out my freezer was dying so now I’m free to once again dabble in the art that is ice cream making. My ice cream garden has given way to many interesting flavors, including tomato basil and sage ice cream. I look forward to more experimental flavors. Peter Pepper ice cream, anyone?

Number 7 – Novelty Baking Pans

Bunnies, dinosaurs – I wish I had unlimited cabinet space. While these pans are made for children I think it’s a great way to add a layer of fun to your dinner parties! I’ve made cornbread no less than a dozen times in these individually portioned fun shapes. Bunny shaped ice cubes for Fruit Night, individual dinosaur meatloaves for Prehistoric Night (sorry, no link, it was before I hit the web). The Headbanging Hostess doesn’t shy away from an opportunity for some childlike fun – neither should you.

Number 6 – My Kitchen-Aid Professional Mixer

Good old, hand held mixer. Much less expensive than the stand up. Sure it might not do as many tricks, but it mixes just fine and I’ve gotten a ton of use out of it. And it’s red. I like that. I’m interested to see how long it lasts. I bought it last year to replace what had been my PARENTS hand-mixer, it was easily over 40 years old. Good old school American craftsmanship.

Number 5 – My George Foreman Grill

Who doesn’t have one of these? It’s the only way I cook chicken breasts. I’ve used it to grill wraps, skirt steak, zucchini, celery – you can even make cookies on it! Clean up is easy. It doesn’t take up a lot of space. This is a great piece of equipment.

Number 4 - My Salad Spinner

I just bought a new one because I discovered mold in the lid of my old one. Ick, I know. Hopefully it was a faulty design and it won’t happen with the new one. It’s mostly clear, so I’ll be able to see what’s going on in there. ANYWAY. Salad spinners make salad making doable. You have to wash the lettuce, but if you put the dressing on wet lettuce it won’t stick. So it has to be dried. And, while putting the lettuce on a towel in front of a fan or the A/C works, it’s much easier to whirl the water off in what will become your salad bowl (after you dry it out so the dressing doesn’t get diluted.) Water and salad don’t mix.

Number 3 – My Rubber Spatula

Pretty low-tech, I know, but incredibly useful. Mine is a ridiculous shade of lime green but I manage to use it multiple times a day. I’d like to have one in every size, so I could scrape out every bit of a cans content. It’s also heat resistant so it’ll go from can to pan without a problem.

Number 2 – My Crockpot

Quite frankly I’m surprised this isn’t number one, but that’s a ridiculous thing to say because I can’t possibly be surprised, I’m the one writing this. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you could cook a shoe in a crockpot and it would taste good. Chili, salsa, goulash, ropa vieja, skirt steak – I get a ton of mileage out of the crockpot. And it’s so easy! That’s the crazy part. Throw it in, turn it on and go. Eight hours later you’ll have an incredible meal. And it doubles as a warmer, serving dish and hot apple cider provider.

And my NUMBER ONE KITCHEN TOY…

My Excalibur Food Dehydrator

This was the number one tag sale buy of all time. Forty bucks for a dehydrator with temperature control, nine trays and tray liners that make fruit leather! OMG FRUIT LEATHER! I have made beef jerky a number of times, and let me tell you, there is no comparing homemade jerky with that commercial processed crap. It’s incredibly tasty warm. I’ve also dehydrated herbs. It’s doubled as a lettuce dryer when I was briefly without a salad spinner. I used it as a warmer for my Thanksgiving Feast and I use it to proof my homemade bread. So I get a lot of use out of that one machine - so random yet so useful.

If you have a small kitchen like me you need to be picky about what toys you give space to. Try to avoid single purpose items that you may not use that often and opt for multi-purpose kitchen electrics that will earn their space and prove their value time and time again.

Friday, December 31, 2010 Last Dinner of 2010 featuring music by Arcane Malevolence

Friday, December 10, 2010 Stock Night! Featuring goose and chicken stock!

Sunday, December 5, 2010 This Thursday Is Stock Night!

Last nights roast chicken carcass is at the bottom of this pot, topped with red peppers, carrots, onion, celery, green cherry tomatoes from the garden and some herbs. I'll let it simmer for about 6 hours, strain it and stick it in the fridge for some super flavor on Thursday.

It's Stock Night!

My post-Thanksgiving stock making yielded me almost two quarts of goose stock, which I will put in the crock pot with a nice piece of skirt steak and some mushrooms and onions for a stewey mess of deliciousness. My neighbor brought me a lifetime supply of carrots, so I'm thinking of maybe topping it with carrot chips, fried in goose fat, of course.

This chicken stock will find itself absorbed into some quinoa for a nice salad course. My neighbor also brought me a lifetime supply of broccoli - quinoa, broccoli and something else salad? Maybe. We'll see how long the broccoli lasts.

And for dessert? Some cupcakes or something - because I have tons of cake mix in stock.

Ba dum bum.

Why am I this crazy stocker? (ZING!) Because I don't really like to waste things. And these poor birds died for my dinner, the least I can do is utilize every bit of flavor available to me. And it's super easy! Throw it in a stockpot, throw in some veggies and herbs and BANG! Six hours later you have stock.

Anytime you're cutting veggies throw the ends into the freezer. That way, when you've got your carcass, the chopping is already done!

How easy is that?

Stock can be frozen in tupperware containers, ziplock bags, even ice cube trays (great for adding little bits of flavor to anything!) Try it!!!

Tuesday, November 30, 2010 Deck The Halls With Lots-O-Nothin'

My friend Linda came today and took a big box of Christmas decorations off my hands. Why, you ask? Because I'm not Christian and I don't want to celebrate Christmas anymore.

As a child I celebrated Christmas. You know, the whole "Santa Claus has nothing to do with the birth of that other guy" thing. I'm not saying it's a secular holiday...I'm typing it. At least that's what it was to me growing up. We weren't celebrating anyone's birth, we were celebrating the big fat guy coming down the chimney and leaving us gifts.

When I moved out to live with my then-boyfriend now-husband we didn't put up a tree or anything. He was a firefighter at the time and he'd always work on Christmas. My mom and I would go to my brothers and...celebrate Christmas. Even though he didn't have a chimney, it was obvious there was no Santa and we weren't celebrating anyone's birth. But...whatever.

Then, for a number of years, I was lucky enough to be involved in a Christmas show at The Spinning Wheel Inn in Redding, CT. I stage managed for a few years and was in the show for a few more - so Christmas became a big part of my life from October until the New Year. I'd go out for the tree, the gifts, the whole sha-bang. Even though, like I said, I wasn't celebrating anyone's birth.

During those years we hosted a few Christmas parties, and they were headbanging indeed. And if you take any advice from me this holiday season let this be it.

Make shit.

Ain't nothing like a homemade gift, I say. And these parties had homemade at the heart - homemade ornaments, to be exact.

I'd cover the table with newspaper, provide glue, glitter, pipe cleaners, felt, straws, corks, beads, sequins - you got the idea. And we'd all get trashed and make the best fucking ornaments you'll ever see. One year I had a giant penis atop my tree adorned with Satan Santas and spider Santas and Sam Adams Santas. Fantastic!

Ain't nothin' like seeing adults fight over glitter.

Some folks were more creative than others, some afraid to even try. But everyone would eventually find their way over to the table to make an ornament and, no matter what the friggin' thing ended up lookin' like, I was always thrilled to put it on my tree.

So, when I was packing it all up to give it to Linda, I put aside all the homemade ornaments and kept them. Why? Because I won't be putting them on a tree. I saved them all because I don't have the heart to give them away. Our friends made them for us - and even though I've given up the holiday - I'm keeping my friends.

And that's what it's all about.

Bang on, my peeps!

Saturday, November 20, 2010 Pizza Night Was Fan-Friggin'-Tastic!

If you have not yet watched the Pizza Night video featuring music by Revolution Pariah take a moment to soak it all in.

The pizza that you see is Mexican in nature, in honor of Marc's going to live south of the border. But the best part of Pizza Night was the infinite variety! Someone brought a Thanksgiving feast to place on the pizza crust, someone brought fennel, pear and balsamic. I'd made sauce, salsa, bruschetta, bacon, pepperoni, chicken, mushrooms. I spent all day prepping toppings. But if you want to have a pizza party you can totally simplify! Have your guests bring toppings, buy pre-chopped veggies and meats. Pizza night is totally doable!

Don't want to make the dough? Buy the dough! Buy the ready made crusts! This is the perfect way to dabble in dinner parties. Stick your toe in and find you love it!

Marc and I made the dough the day before and I quickly developed a system for delivering the perfect crust. In a 500 degree oven I started each pie on a metal pizza tray (it has holes in it, probably helps get the hot air to the underside). After 8 minutes or so they were cooked enough to slide onto a hot pizza stone. That really crisped up the crust! Unbelievably tasty! Best pizza I've had in a long time - and I'm not just saying that because I made it.

Chicken and bacon was my favorite combination! Being allergic to non-organic chicken I've never had the pleasure of having it on a pizza. Outstanding! The chicken and mushroom was also tasty. They were all tasty, who am I kidding?

And the dessert pizza?!?! Cherry Butter, White Chocolate Cream Cheese and Almonds! To die for!

So, listen! Go for it! Throw your own Pizza Night! And send me the pictures! headbanginghostess@gmail.com

Bang on, my peeps!

Friday, November 19, 2010 Pizza Night! Featuring "Atrophy in Apathy" by Revolution Pariah

Wednesday, November 17, 2010 Tomorrow Night is Pizza Night!

Marc and I spent the afternoon making dough. And I just realized the plastic is stuck to the dough when I took this picture. Ha! Good thing I have more flour.

Tomorrow I will prep a slew of toppings - sauce, salsa, meats, cheeses, veggies. I have a few fabulous ideas, but we'll have plenty of dough. We'll be able to make pretty much anything people want. The bonus is my friend Stacy's brother will be bringing his culinary skills to the (pizza) stone. So that's a wild card. But, of course, dessert is already planned in my head :)

The best part of tomorrow will actually be Friday when I get to work on the video featuring Revolution Pariah! I am most excited.

Stay tuned!

Monday, November 8, 2010 Go Shawty, It's Your Birthday!

It's my birthday today. I'm 38 years old. I'll never lie about my age. Remind me.

On this day last year my husband and I served up a Big E inspired feast. Bacon Cheeseburgers on Donuts, Chocolate Covered Bacon, Lobster Mac & Cheese. So many foods I can't even remember.

We made that dinner together. That don't happen no more.

My kitchen.

Tonight we went to a lovely dinner - I had Lobster Mac & Cheese. And I didn't realize the connection until just now. The subconscious mind is a terrible thing to waste.

And now? Dessert. A bunch of pastries from Whole Foods and MAPLE BACON GELATO!

Sorry for yelling.

Bang on, my peeps!

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Once Again, Bands-A-Plenty!

Tomorrow I will be entertaining three bands! The Midnightmares, They Hate Us and Arcane Malevolence. Of course, as it turns out, my freezer is on its last legs. It may have something to do with the fact that I've been treating my kitchen as if it serves a banquet hall for almost a year. It also may have something to do with the amounts of food my wonderful, well-intentioned neighbor brings over. I haven't eaten 7 bags of frozen pasta in the last five years, I'm not going to start now. So they sit there taking up space and eating up energy. It also could be that the freezer is old. We've been living here for 10 years. And if anyone can explain to me how THAT happened I'd greatly appreciate it.

But, never-the-less, dinner MUST go on and I am left with the only option being making every-damn-thing tomorrow.

This actually isn't that hard a prospect. Brilliant me is planning to serve Cowboy Pie and Chicken Pot Pie in Pumpkins. So I'll actually be able to make the fillings on the stove, put the pumpkins in the oven and then fill them for service (in my banquet hall). The pumpkins will act like warmers and keep the food at a good temperature.

And my lovely, giving neighbor brought me a beautiful cake stand that I'll adorn with Chocolate White Chocolate Chip Cookies - and maybe I'll make some whipped cream. Because I polished off last weeks cookies from the Happy Endings by dipping them in whipped cream and stuffing them in my mouth.

Stay tuned! And go to the show!

Monday, October 11, 2010 Sexual Innuendo Night Coming Up!

Triple D has inspired the double D HH to declare this Thursday "Sexual Innuendo Night!"

We'll start the night off with a round of jerky, follow it up with some Three-Ways and then, of course, some Happy Endings. (No I will not provide you with a link for that. I'm sure you have one.)

All of it from scratch. Except the cheese.

Stay tuned.
